The tbone aviationTM headset in a piston engine aircraft?

A very frequently question is

Can the tbone aviationTM headset work in a very noisy cockpit like a piston engine
aircraft or a helicopter?

The simple answer is YES but it is a completely different concept.
The tbone aviationTM headset was originally designed conceptually with a B737 or a similar cockpit in mind. Pilots working in these cockpits were not (and even today most still are not) using headsets during cruise, and with a only relatively new awareness of noise endured hearing damage and fatigue, the gate-to-gate use of headsets are becoming more common. Pilots flying "big birds" now want a headset that prevents hearing loss and/or fatigue but
also preferably a headset that is not compromising comfort and cockpit communication.
The tbone aviationTM headset fits these requirements. Its strong points are:

  1. a noise protection tuned for use in an environment where the noise is mostly high frequent and yet allow for normal conversation
  2. with no boom, no ear cups, no headband and a weight of only 10 grams (per earpieces) it is "like using no headset at all"

The use of headsets in a very noisy cockpit is very different. Here pilots are used to applying half a kilo weight on their head just to preserve their hearing and at the same time be online in the radio. In these cockpits nobody expects to communicate easily without using intercom, and even on the intercom it is expected that the transmission is garbled and noisy as the microphone struggles to differentiate voice from noise. So obviously there should not be any use for the tbone aviationTM headset in a noisier cockpit?

Not true - think again!

It is true that a tbone aviationTM headset is not very useful on its own but in a combination with a simple lightweight hearing defender you will have a "tbone aviation piston engine version." Is it different from a traditional headset considering that this version also has ear cups, a headband and the weight is nowhere near the 10 grams anymore? Yes, because the weight is much reduced (depending on your choice of hearing defender) and the transmission is un-garbled and noise free. Add to that the broad range of hearing defenders that you can choose from according to your taste and preferences and you will actually get a very
customizable headset.
So the "tbone aviation piston engine version" offers you a much reduced weight

  1. a clear and noise free transmission
  2. your own choice in color and design
  3. your own choice in noise protection capability - you can even get ANR

There is actually only one little detail you should be aware of before you decide to use the tbone aviationTM headset in a very noisy cockpit - the loudspeaker volume is a little offset. This means that the radio will be approximately 8-10 dB weaker in one ear (selectable).
