How to place the earpiece correctly in your ear
In below video, you can learn how to position the earpiece(s) correctly in your ear. The earpiece marked with a red label is for the right ear.
Acoustic noise
To avoid acoustic noise and ensure that the scratching on the cables is not transferred to the microphone and through the intercom to you co-pilot, remember to tighten the little slider on the earpiece cable so the wires from the earpieces are in contact with your skin on your cheeks. Do not tighten it too much as this will cause a drag on the earpieces and will also make it uncomfortable for you to wear. You can test it at home before flying with the headset for the first time. Apply the headset and scratch on the cables to find out how to positioning the cable and how much you need to fasten the slider. Learn more in the video below.
When the slider is loose, scratching below the slider will be heard in the earpieces as acoustic noise.
tbone aviationTM headset and hot intercom
When using tbone aviationTM headset on hot intercom, it is important to remember that your co-pilot can hear everything you put into your mouth - coffee, food, chewing gum etc. It will be a very good idea to get a routine where you switch off the intercom while eating and drinking - your co-pilot will appreciate it.
Fitting the earpiece cable to the amplifier
When using the tbone aviationTM headset for the first time, you have to be aware how you connect the earpiece cable and the interface cable to the amplifier. The earpiece cable has a male connector which fits into the female connection on the amplifier. The interface cable has a female connector which fits into the male connector on the amplifier. There is a marking on the back side of the amplifier, which shows the position of the female connector on the amplifier to which the earpiece cable shall be connected. Please watch the video below.
Noise reduction
The tbone aviationTM headset is not an active noise reduction headset so if you are used to an ANR headset, your first impressions of the tbone aviationTM headset might be that the noise reduction is too little or even non-existing. However, when on cruise and the workload is low, try to listen carefully to the noise level and the remove the headset for a minute while listening to the noise level again. Re-apply the headset and hear the difference. With an ANR headset you are used to not really hearing anything in the cockpit but with the tbone aviationTM headset you can hear everything - only at a safe level.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Your tbone aviationTM headset is designed to work for many years of normal use and will only need some cleaning from time to time. It is strongly recommended that you follow the instructions below when cleaning the earpieces.
Cleaning Instructions
Clean the earpieces with a clean soft tissue or a wet towel. Be careful not to damage the flexible rubber balloon that covers the microphone.
Removing earwax
Cerumen (earwax) is a natural fluid produced in the ear canal to protect the sensible ear from dirt. Over time, earwax enters the earphone tube reducing the sound level of the speakers.
Use the earwax remover you received with your headset (see video below). Be careful not to push the earwax deeper into the tube as this will lower the sound level from the speaker significantly.
